Combined with Sonar's built-in loop construction mode (I'll talk about it in a bit), Cyclone isn't terribly full-featured, but it's easy to use either for remixing or sample mangling. AdvertisementĪnother really fun dance-oriented synth is Cakewalk's Cyclone, which pulls apart sliced loops to be recombined or assigned singly to trigger pads. Rapture loads up to six samples for use as oscillators, and then each of those can be modulated using a built-in step-based envelope-great for wanting to feel like Daft Punk. Like Dimension, Rapture LE is a limited version of Cakewalk's full-sized synthesizer, and it's ridiculously fun to tweak around, even if it's mostly meant for dance music.

There are much better virtual analog instruments out there, many for free, so I didn't spend much time with DreamStation-especially when there's Rapture LE to play with. The DreamStation DXi2 is an old plugin, and it shows-it's a virtual analog synth, meant to mimic classic synth sounds like the Moog Modular. And SFZ is a generic SoundFont player, which isn't terribly useful on its own, but it offers basic playback at a very low CPU cost. DropZone plays the REX files created by Propellerheads' Recycle, but can't create them-it also does minimal loop editing on drag-and-drop samples. This library includes the Garritan Pocket Orchestra, which I like quite a bit for its string samples. It can't create sounds with the same depth as the retail version, but it comes with a fairly good library. Then there are three samplers, each with different uses: Dimension LE is a general-purpose multisample player cut down from Cakewalk's Dimension Pro. They're also easy on CPU cycles, and TTS-1 can run up to 16 different patches out to four separate outputs, so you can get a lot of use out of a single instance. And while I wouldn't use TTS-1 to write my next symphony, it has several excellent patches on it for pop and rock music, including a set of very acceptable pianos. The Roland legacy means that GrooveSynth's drum and bass emulations have a classic (if cheesy) sound. Neither, sadly, can be automated by the Synth Rack or track parameters, which is kind of a downer since they both have some very usable sounds. There are two Roland-sourced synths: one is a general MIDI soundbank called TTS-1, and the other is an 80's-style drum machine named GrooveSynth. The range of instruments provided with Sonar seems a little eclectic, but it covers the basics. In theįoreground, the Synth Rack is currently set up to provide quick access to seven Top left: TTS-1, Session Drummer 2, Rapture LE, and Dimension LE.

I used track automation to provide a gentle volume slide into the sound, and panned the violins into their correct orchestral position.
